the swell looked pretty hefty on thursday morning so dan and me decided to go and check out some south coast spots, after driving to a few spots we ended up surfing at caerhayes looking back at the castle..nice..the waves were ok, not brilliant, but not crap..the water was brown and so is this photograph.

finally, after a summer of surfboard let-downs and sled disorders I got my new board from steve over at Empire surfboards at the beginning of November...
my boards are not generally conventional, not because I strive to be different, I just like to try new things to piss around on, and fall off in different ways...in my downtime from having a daily driver I had a go on a beaten up shortboard that was 6' x 19.5 x 2ish, had a great time on it and fancied my own. i am slightly lighter (aaaahem) than the owner of said 6fter, so i basically took 2inches of the length and a pinch off the width wanting to increase the possibilities of this board, i went for a 5 future box option.

Overall, the first thing I noticed was that this board has a bombproof glassjob, it makes the board weigh slightly heavier than a more performance board, but give me strength over a few grams. The board paddles great, catches waves really well, and certainly duckdives better than my mini simmons..having tried both quad and 3 fin set ups, I currently prefer the quad, but the waves have been a good size and pretty hollow the last few surfs, I reckon the 3fin will come into it's own in smaller mooshier surf..super happy with this board, although my simmons habits still come through, I've had some screamers on this board, and it's made me enjoy surfing in a different way..cheers steve!

great weekend overall, got up early on saturday, grommit and me headed down to hayle rivermouth for some surfing, got the right hander up in front of the rocks blindin' 2 hours in, I tucked into a backhand close out and got clobbered round the head by my own board, this still hurts like 3 days later..deciding not to risk surfing for the rest of the day, we made a bit of an ale-ey afternoon of it...

sunday, about 11;30 got in, some people would say it was wobbly, or it was better earlier...but I had a good surf none-the-less..

we didn't actually surf the rivermouth, but some slick hipsters on longboards were having some pretty good rides..

thanks to jonny hay at confusion zine, I had people to skate with in in santa cruz, hooked up with the bods at broprints and felt very honoured to drink a pbr with them at breaktime...got to skate derby, hook up with zarosh and skate the quarters out the back of bills wheels, man what a day...all finished off with getting nailed on mendocino counties best ales bought from the shop at the end of the pier whilst watching pelicans from the seat outside..R-A-D

nike involved with surfing, just doesn't feel right, a massive company with no root in surfing chucking more money than an average person will see in their lifetime into advertising, sponsership, gimmicks and competition prizes. Nike wetsuits next, nike surfboards nike surfcamps. I'm not going to rant, but think of the implications to our awesome UK surf scene if a big multinational like Nike get there mitts into it...are we ready to be globalised for the sake of some lights on a beach.

off to brittany and france on sunday, france has always been one of my favourite surf destinations, to be honest i'd rather go there than bali or oz, you pretty much have to wear some sort of neoprene most of the year, but, if like me you appreciate the more simple things in life like good food, good drink and amazing countryside, brittany is for you. Travelling somewhere hectic just for the waves just doesn't cut it anymore, that's why france ticks all my boxes i guess. That's old age kicking in i'm sure, sometimes I feel like a festering vintage wine! Here's my 2 5'4s waiting for a good outing at la torche...

surfing if anything is an emotional and physical experience, lets not go into
whether it's a sport or not, but recently i've been 'told off' about my shoutyness
in the water..

lets get this straight, if you hang out with your partner, best buddy or whoever for
a really long amount of time, they will piss you off, the same is with surfing, which is
fine in my opinion..sometimes I have amazing days when I feel on the brink of enlightenment
others I surf like a kook and and like to scream profanities at seagulls, unfortunately my
honeymoon period went years ago and i'm now in the emotional rollercoaster stage and will
probably stay here till I die..surfing is for everyone, even us emotionally unstable bastards!

Grumpy or no, I still loves it...like a kitten shitting on your records...you can't stay angry at it for long.

After travelling around from Missouri to Colorado I finally arrive in LA spent a day at the amazing Huntington Botanic Garden, then headed into central LA to the greyhound bus

station. This was one of my most terrifying experiences in my life...what with everyone I met

saying..shit man, that's next to skid row, watch out..etc etc..to be fair when i got there i was approached by a load of guys sloping like zombie tramps, but I must have looked pretty hellish after looking at plant databases for 2 weeks and I wasn't hassled one bit..the greyhound journey was pretty sweet, 9 hours of quite comfy seats and whisky stop at santa barbara (i think). Rocked up to Santa Cruz at bang on 6am, just in time to see the sunrise..
